COLUMBUS – State Reps. Christine Cockley (D-Columbus) and Munira Abdullahi (D-Columbus) last week introduced House Bill (HB) 239, legislation to designate the second week of April as ‘National Library Week’.

“Well-funded libraries are the backbone of our communities. The work they do is too important to be overlooked,” said Rep. Cockley “By recognizing National Library Week in April, we hope to remind all our colleagues just how vital these institutions are for our constituents, and why they deserve our full support and investment.”

“Libraries are more than just buildings with books—they’re hubs of knowledge, connection, and opportunity, especially for young people, immigrants, and working families who rely on them every day, We introduced this bill to celebrate all that public libraries make possible; and I voted no on a budget that undermines those very values. I’ll keep fighting to ensure our libraries get the funding and respect they deserve,” said Rep. Munira.

Public libraries are a valuable resource to communities across Ohio as they provide reliable internet access, promote gathering for community events and engagement, share employment resources, and foster a space for continued education and training. This bill recognizes libraries for their positive contributions to the lives of many Ohio residents and families.

On Wednesday, April 9th, the Ohio House passed House Bill (HB) 96, the state operating budget for FY 2026-27, with a vote of 60-39. Reps. Cockley, Munira and the entire House Democratic Caucus voted “NO” as the current version because it greatly underfunds extremely vital public programs and services, including public libraries.

Although the budget awaits action from the Ohio Senate, Reps. Cockley and Munira will continue to fight for adequate funding and support of all public libraries in Ohio.

By recognizing Library Week, the bill sponsors hope to highlight the essential role of public libraries and affirm that these institutions deserve meaningful and proper investment from the State.

HB 239 currently awaits assignment to a House committee.
