COLUMBUS — State Rep. Munira Abdullahi (D-Columbus), the first Muslim, Somali Representative to be elected into the Ohio House hosted the 3rd Annual Iftar Dinner at the Ohio Statehouse. The event celebrated the fast-breaking evening meal, called Iftar, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Rep. Munira started this annual statehouse tradition in 2023. Guests of all backgrounds attended this year’s celebration.

"It was an honor to host the 3rd Annual Ohio Statehouse Iftar Dinner. This year's theme is a direct response to the hardships our constituents and our nation are currently facing. From local economic struggles to global political tensions, and the erosion of long-established civil liberties, there is no Ohioan who is not acutely aware of the turmoil we’re experiencing,” said Rep. Munira.

“This year’s theme, 'Hope,' draws inspiration from the Islamic verse, ‘Verily, with hardship comes ease.’ I urge all of us to be that ease for one another during these trying times— check in on neighbors who may be silently struggling with food insecurity or mental health challenges and engage civically to the fullest extent possible. Organize. Protest. Vote! Your voice is needed now more than ever."

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is a sacred time of reflection, community, charity, and faith for Muslims across the world. During the month-long celebration, the majority of Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset and traditionally break their fasts together at iftar.
