Rep. Munira Announces More Than $1.2M in Public Transportation & Infrastructure Funding
COLUMBUS - State Rep. Munira Abdullahi (D-Columbus) today announced that more than $1.2M has been awarded to the development of central Ohio’s public transit systems and infrastructure. The funding comes from Governor Mike DeWine’s and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT)’s Ohio Workforce Mobility Partnership Program (OWMP).
“This is an incredible win for our District! With over $1.2 million coming to District 9, we’re not just investing in public transit—we’re creating real pathways to jobs, education, and opportunities for residents. The new transit shelters are especially meaningful—they will provide a safe, protected space for bus riders, whether they’re braving harsh weather or simply waiting for their next connection. It’s about more than infrastructure—it’s about dignity and ensuring everyone in our community has access to reliable, comfortable transportation,” said Rep. Munira.
The $1.2M is a fraction of the $17.5M total awarded to support public workforce transportation in rural and urban areas of Ohio. The funding will support 33 transit projects that increase the ease and efficiency of transporting residents to economically significant employment centers or places of employment outside of their home communities.
The $1.2M funding that’s been allocated to House District 9 will be dispersed to:
- The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) received $1,001,142 for construction at the Rickenbacker Transit Hub.
- Funds will be used to construct the entry drive and canopy at COTA’s Rickenbacker Transit Hub. The canopy will service COTA bus lines, the GREAT Shuttle, and other neighboring rural county transit buses into job-dense areas.
- The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) received $240,000 for transit shelters.
- Funding will enable additional bus stop infrastructure at stops with significant amounts of boardings proximity to major employers, education, and healthcare locations.
