COLUMBUS — State Reps. Eric Synenberg (D-Beachwood) and Beryl Brown Piccolantonio (D-Gahanna) this week introduced House Bill (HB) 573, legislation to create The Pediatric Cancer Research Fund.

“This legislation was inspired by constituents who have endured circumstances no family should ever have to face,” said Rep. Synenberg. “Their strength and advocacy for their children motivated us to push for a fund that supports research with the potential to change lives. We believe Ohioans should have the opportunity to contribute to that effort, if they so choose.”

“One of our highest responsibilities and priorities as state legislators is to fight and work every day for young children and their families. The Pediatric Cancer Research Fund will support some of our most vulnerable children by working towards treating and curing this awful disease,” said Rep. Brown Piccolantonio.

This legislation will:

  • Create the Pediatric Cancer Research Fund within the state treasury but funds will be managed by the Department of Health;
  • Allow Ohioans to contribute to the fund either when filing their state income tax return, renewing a vehicle registration at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), or by an independent donation;
  • Provide financial support to Ohio hospitals conducting pediatric cancer research who make a request to the Director of the Department of Health; and
  • Require Director of the Department of Health to develop and distribute informational materials on the importance of pediatric cancer search.
