Ohio Jewish Caucus Condemns Comments Made During Senate Judiciary Hearing

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Jewish Caucus today released the following statement regarding concerning comments made this week during the Senate Judiciary Committee opponent testimony on Senate Bill (SB) 87, which would define antisemitism and include it within ethnic intimidation. During his testimony, a leader of the Center for American Islamic Relations in Ohio claimed that “they [Israelis] are literally skinning the dead bodies…in Palestine.” There is no substantiated evidence to verify this claim, and it is a clear reference to some of the most vile antisemitic rhetoric from history.
“Antisemitism is at an extreme. At a committee hearing on the IHRA definition, a bill meant to define and bolster education on antisemitism, a witness spread dangerous and antisemitic disinformation about the Jewish community,” said the Ohio Jewish Caucus. “We call upon our colleagues to stand up against antisemitism in all forms and in all settings.”
The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) developed the working definition of antisemitism, promoting Holocaust education, remembrance, and research worldwide. Based on the incident during SB 87 testimony, there is clearly a tremendous need for more education and understanding. We cannot tolerate hate or bigotry, and have to be vigilant not only in our opposition but also in our commitment to pluralism and diversity.
The Ohio Jewish Caucus is proudly represented by Reps. Beryl Brown Piccolantonio (D-Gahanna), Dani Isaacsohn (D-Cincinnati), Christine Cockley (D-Columbus), Eric Synenberg (D-Beachwood), Karen Brownlee (D-Symmes Township) and Senator Casey Weinstein (D-Hudson).
