COLUMBUS- State Rep. Elgin Rogers, Jr. (D- Toledo) today announced Lucas County as a recipient for the 2023 Ohio Jail Safety and Security Program from the office of Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.

“This grant funding is transformational in supporting our staff and individuals who are being held, charged and are awaiting sentencing. This is a first step in investing and ensuring that the women and men who staff the Lucas County Jail have the resources and facilities that allow them to remain safe and perform the difficult tasks of their jobs to the best of their God given ability,”  said Rep. Rogers. “I am grateful to both Governor DeWine and Director Annette Chambers-Smith for this vital funding to Lucas County. These funds will help in creating an atmosphere that promotes a focus on worker safety, while ensuring that those being held have mental health services, and  opportunities to better understand how to avoid the offenses that may have contributed to their arrest and incarceration. We must remember that all Ohioans, no matter who they are or where they come from, deserve to have a facility that would ensure their safety and humane treatment while in the custody of the state..”

Lucas County will receive $10,065,000 in matching funds for the construction of a new 430-bed jail. The current facility opened in 1977, and the physical layout can no longer serve the needs of the staff and incarcerated population.

The nearly $50 million allocated to the 2023 Ohio Jail Safety and Security Program will support construction, renovation, and security improvement projects at nearly a dozen local jails in Ohio.
