COLUMBUS - State Rep. Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) yesterday introduced bipartisan legislation to establish statewide standards for civil parking ticket late fees. Current state law does not set a maximum late fee, specify a minimum grace period, or restrict administrative and collection charges. As a result, municipalities can impose penalties that exceed the original fine, often in a short period of time. Penalties can add up quickly and vary across jurisdictions, disproportionately impacting low-income residents, seniors, and working families.

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today announced the passage of House Bill (HB) 393 out of the Ohio House with a vote of 86-0. This bipartisan legislation requires community-based correctional facilities and programs to assist individuals in custody in obtaining a state-issued identification card prior to their release. Previously, the 135th General Assembly enacted a program to assist individuals in custody of the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections in obtaining an ID card, HB 393 expands this program to community based correctional facilities.

Brewer (D-Cleveland) today held a press conference condemning Ohio Republicans in the state legislature for failing to act on any measures that could have preserved Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for 1.4M Ohioans. Instead, in two days, more than half million children, more than 250,000 seniors, and an estimated 45,000 veterans are at risk of going hungry when the federal government defaults on its November deposit to fully fund SNAP benefit cards due to President Trump and Congressional Republicans' refusal to end the federal government shutdown.
