Rep. Sean Brennan Proudly Cosponsors HB 743 to Protect Ohio Families from "Forever Chemicals"

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D–Parma) today announced his proud cosponsorship of House Bill 743, legislation introduced by State Reps. Daniel Troy (D–Willowick) and Elgin Rogers, Jr. (D–Toledo). This bill bans the sale and distribution of certain products containing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as “forever chemicals” in Ohio.

PFAS are synthetic compounds that do not easily break down and can persist in the environment and human body for generations. Exposure to PFAS is linked to serious health risks such as cancer, immune system disruption, and developmental issues.

“Clean air, drinking water, and soil are foundational to the health and well-being of every Ohioan,” said Rep. Brennan. “We cannot afford to keep ignoring the long-term effects of these toxins in our everyday consumer products.”

Modeled on successful legislation in other states, HB 743 aims to eliminate unnecessary PFAS from frequently used items such as children’s products, cookware, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, and furniture. The measure includes common-sense exceptions for essential industrial or already regulated applications, where no feasible alternatives currently exist.

Rep. Brennan noted that safer alternatives are already widely available and successfully utilized in other states, proving that public health protections and market availability can go hand in hand.

“Families should not have to guess whether everyday items in their homes contain harmful, invisible chemicals when safer alternatives are already within reach,” added Rep. Brennan. “I’m glad to join my colleagues in supporting this vital legislation to protect public health, preserve our natural resources, and secure a cleaner, safer future for our children.”
