COLUMBUS — State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D-Parma) today announced the introduction of legislation to correct a decades-old error in the Ohio Revised Code that has inaccurately spelled the Latin name of the Buckeye tree—the official state tree of Ohio.

Under current law (Ohio Revised Code §¿5.05), the Buckeye tree is referred to as Aesculus globra. The correct scientific name, however, is Aesculus glabra, a species native to Ohio and commonly known as the Ohio Buckeye. The typographical error has remained in the law since the statute was enacted in 1953.

“As a proud Buckeye, I believe our state’s official symbols deserve to be represented with accuracy and respect,” said Rep. Brennan. “This isn’t just a matter of spelling—it’s about honoring the natural heritage of Ohio and ensuring the Revised Code reflects the same excellence we expect in every part of state government.”

Rep. Brennan’s bill will amend Ohio Revised Code §¿5.05 to correct the Latin name to Aesculus glabra. The change is strictly technical and does not alter the designation of the Buckeye as the state tree.

The legislation has already garnered bipartisan interest from members who agree that attention to detail—even in symbolic matters—is a reflection of pride in Ohio’s identity.

“Whether you’re a botanist, a student, or just a proud Ohioan, you deserve a state law that gets the Buckeye right,” said Rep. Brennan.

The legislation awaits a bill number and committee assignment in the coming weeks.
