COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D-Parma) today celebrated the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) recent announcement of $7.6 million in funding through its Routes to School Program, including two major investments in the City of Cleveland. These projects aim to make it safer and easier for students in grades K–12 to walk or bike to school.

“I’m thrilled that Cleveland is receiving critical funding to support safer, healthier transportation options for our students,” said Rep. Brennan, a former teacher. “Not only does this promote physical activity and wellness, but it also teaches lifelong safety habits and builds stronger connections between our schools and neighborhoods.”

Two projects were awarded funding:

  • $20,000 to Bike Cleveland for a professional development program to train Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) physical education teachers to deliver high-quality bicycle and pedestrian safety education to K–8 students. Participating schools will receive fleets of bicycles, helmets, and other essential safety equipment; and
  • $1 million to the City of Cleveland for infrastructure improvements that will enhance safety for students walking or biking to school.
These initiatives are part of ODOT’s broader Safe Routes to School efforts, which offer resources, technical support, and funding to encourage active transportation for students across Ohio.

“Whether it’s through better sidewalks, crossing improvements, or safety education, these projects are an investment in our kids’ futures,” added Rep. Brennan. “I’m grateful to ODOT, Bike Cleveland, and the City of Cleveland for their partnership and shared commitment to student safety and mobility.”

The Routes to School Program continues to be a key part of Ohio’s commitment to safe, accessible, and equitable transportation infrastructure for all students.

As a former educator and Parma City Council member, Rep. Brennan continues to advocate for policies that support public education, safe communities, and sustainable infrastructure.
