Rep. Brennan Announces Passage of Bill Designating Louis P. Shuster Memorial Interchange

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D–Parma) today announced the passage of Sub. Senate Bill (SB) 52, a bipartisan road naming omnibus bill that includes House Bill (HB) 360, legislation he jointly sponsored with State Rep. Ty Mathews (R-Findlay). The measure designates the interchange of Interstate 480 and West 150th Street in Cleveland as the “Louis P. Shuster Memorial Interchange” in honor of the late Louis Paul Shuster.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, dedicated railroad worker, and committed union member, Louis Shuster devoted his life to serving both his country and his community. Brother Lou tragically lost his life at age 46 while working as a locomotive engineer when the Norfolk Southern railcar he was operating was struck by a dump truck.
“It is a tremendous honor to help ensure that Lou Shuster’s legacy lives on for generations to come,” said Rep. Brennan. “Lou served our nation in uniform, worked tirelessly as a railroad professional, and dedicated himself to supporting his fellow veterans and union brothers and sisters. I am grateful to work alongside Rep. Ty Mathews on this bipartisan effort and thank my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for recognizing Lou’s extraordinary life of service.”
After serving in the U.S. Army, Shuster began his railroad career as a train conductor in 2005 and was promoted to locomotive engineer in 2014. He joined the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) in 2016 and served as Veterans Affairs Delegate for Norfolk Southern and Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway members. He was widely respected for his advocacy on behalf of veterans working in the railroad industry and throughout the broader community.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lou was a devoted son, caregiver to his parents, loving father, cherished brother, and loyal friend. Those who knew him remember his unwavering commitment to helping others and his deep sense of responsibility to his family, coworkers, and fellow veterans.
The interchange at I-480 and West 150th Street holds special significance, as it serves as the primary route many BLET members travel to reach the nearby rail yard where Lou worked. Designating Exit 12A as the “Louis P. Shuster Memorial Interchange” will stand as a lasting tribute to a man whose life exemplified service, sacrifice, and dedication to others.
Sub. SB 52 now awaits the governor’s signature.
