Democracy Prevails as Ohioans Defeat Issue 1
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D-Parma) yesterday praised the residents of Ohio for their overwhelming support in defeating Issue 1 during the August 8th Special Election.
“From the very beginning, this issue was opposed by Ohioans in a bipartisan fashion. Ohio voters sent the same clear message that they sent over 100 years ago when they gave themselves the power to initiate constitutional amendments – when the state legislature does not act in accordance with our will, we will impose it. I am very pleased that the voters saw through the rhetoric and protected direct democracy in Ohio,” said Rep. Brennan.
The defeat of Issue 1 is a significant victory for safeguarding Ohio’s democratic process while respecting the diverse opinions of its citizens. It ensures that future constitutional changes will reflect the majority’s will and uphold the principle of “one person, one vote.”
House Democrats will continue to put people first and uphold the democratic values that make Ohio a beacon of freedom, dignity, and opportunity.
