COLUMBUS – State Representative Sarah Fowler Arthur (R-Ashtabula) announced her support of House Bill 340 that passed out of State and Local Government Committee last week. This legislation will establish the month of September as “International Underground Railroad Month” in Ohio.

“Ashtabula County’s history is rich with the abolition movement and House Bill 340 will provide an opportunity to recognize local contributions to end slavery each September,” said Fowler Arthur.

This designation acknowledges the importance of the Underground Railroad for its irradiation of slavery in the United States. Ohio with this bill will join many other states in proclaiming September as “International Underground Railroad Month.”

Communities across the state of Ohio played an incremental role in providing a pathway to freedom for so many. House Bill 340 celebrates freedom and the ability for people to help others in a time of great need.

“House Bill 340 will help preserve the stories and efforts of those who risked their lives for the sake of freedom for future generations,” said Fowler Arthur.
