Hiner Honors Carol Fitzsimons at the Ohio Statehouse
State Representative Mark Hiner (R-Howard) recently honored Howard resident Carol Fitzsimons at the Ohio Statehouse, recognizing her decades of competition and advocacy in the Transplant Games. In celebration of her upcoming induction into the Transplant Games Hall of Fame, Fitzsimons was presented with a ceremonial American flag to take with her to this year’s games.
The Transplant Games, held every two years, bring together thousands of organ transplant recipients and living donors from around the world to promote the importance of organ donation and healthy living after transplant.
“I am extremely impressed with the work that Carol has done for the Transplant Games,” said Hiner. “Her story of perseverance and dedication to helping others is truly remarkable, and I’m honored to present her with an American flag to bring to this year’s games.”
Fitzsimons was diagnosed with kidney disease at age 17, and by 19, she was on home dialysis. Her friend and teaching colleague, Janet Patrick, generously donated one of her kidneys—an act that saved Carol’s life. Just a year after her transplant, she competed in her first Transplant Games and has since participated in all 13 U.S. and World Transplant Games.
Now, nearly 25 years post-transplant, Fitzsimons will once again compete on the world stage in Dresden, Germany, participating in the 400-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle, and 50-meter fly swimming events. She will also be formally inducted into the Transplant Games Hall of Fame in recognition of her athletic accomplishments and tireless advocacy.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Fitzsimons has served for decades as a Donate Life Ambassador with Lifeline of Ohio—a nonprofit dedicated to organ, eye, and tissue donation. Through this work, she continues to raise awareness and share her story to inspire others to consider becoming donors.
Constituents who wish to become organ, eye, and tissue donors can learn more at www.lifelineofohio.org or simply say “Yes” when renewing their driver’s license or state ID at the BMV. After registering, it’s important to have a conversation with your family about your decision.
