COLUMBUS – State Reps. Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park) and Dontavius Jarrells (D-Columbus) yesterday held a press conference to discuss the introduction of the Marriage Equality Act. The bill would provide clear legal protections for same-sex and interracial marriages in Ohio, giving them the same rights and benefits as other married couples.

“I believe that this is an important piece of legislation that will show Ohioans that with all the hate in the world right now, there are people fighting for love, and respect for all Ohioans,” said Rep. Miranda. “Marriage for all Ohioans, regardless of gender, race, or sexuality, should be protected. A marriage represents a special commitment, symbolizing a devotion for another human; a right that should never be denied.”

“Ohio is home to people from all corners of the globe. They have chosen to reside here, to raise their families, in the hope that Ohio would be a place of acceptance, regardless of one's appearance,” said Rep. Jarrells. “All Ohioans, without exception, deserve the fundamental right to love, to marry, and to build a family with whomever their heart chooses. We aspire to be a place that welcomes all kinds of families, prioritizing people over politics.”

Civil Rights Activist Jim Obergefell, plaintiff of the infamous Obergefell v. Hodges U.S. Supreme Court case, and Equality Ohio’s Public Policy Director Maria Bruno spoke at today’s event and shared their wholeheartedly support for the legislation.

“Ohio must protect our right to marry. It is time for Ohio to choose love instead of hate. Ohioans deserve the right to publicly and legally commit to the person they love,” said Civil Rights Activist Jim Obergefell. “We deserve to live in a state where we can form, build, and sustain our families on an equal basis.”

“Today we take a step forward with this legislation that ensures that Ohio’s statutory code no longer discriminates LGBTQ+ Ohioans by bringing our code into alignment with Obergefell v. Hodge decision,” said Equality Ohio Public Policy Director Maria Bruno. “We are proud to support this step that provides a positive direction for our LGBTQ+ Ohioans.”

Rep. Tavia Galonski (D-Akron) is a primary joint-sponsor of the Marriage Equality Act with Rep. Miranda. She was unable to attend today’s press conference.
