Reps. Jarrells, Pizzulli's Bill Honoring Former Pro Baseball Player Al Oliver Passes House Transportation Committee
COLUMBUS - State Reps. Dontavius L. Jarrells (D-Columbus) and Justin Pizzulli (R-Scioto County) today announced that their bipartisan bill, House Bill (HB) 320, honoring former Major League baseball player Al Oliver unanimously passed out of the House Transportation Committee this afternoon.
“The designation of State Route 125 as ‘Al Oliver Highway’ is a fitting tribute to a hometown hero who defied the odds to achieve greatness. It stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of community, and the enduring impact of one man's extraordinary legacy,” said Rep. Jarrells.
A native of Portsmouth, Ohio, Al Oliver became a rising star in the MLB, an icon of American baseball from 1968 to 1985, and a trail blazer for African American athletes everywhere. He brought Ohioan tenacity and talent with him to every team and field he graced with his skill and sportsmanship.
In retirement, Al has found his calling in ministry, Beulah Baptist Church and is currently serving as the chairman of the Deacon Board. A gifted orator, long after his career in professional baseball, he is still looked up to as a gifted servant-leader and valued figure in the Portsmouth and southeast Ohio community.
HB 320 now heads to the House floor for a vote.
