Reps. Jarrells, Pizzulli Reintroduce Legislation to Designate "Al Oliver Highway"
COLUMBUS — Assistant Minority Leader Dontavius L. Jarrells (D-Columbus) and State Representative Justin Pizzulli (R-Scioto County) have reintroduced House Bill (HB) 35, bipartisan legislation to designate a portion of State Route 125 in Scioto County as "Al Oliver Highway," honoring the legacy of Portsmouth native and Major League Baseball icon Al Oliver.
"Al Oliver's story is one of resilience, talent, and unwavering commitment to his community," said Rep. Jarrells. "This designation is a fitting tribute to a man who not only excelled in baseball but continues to serve as an inspiration and leader in Portsmouth and beyond."
Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Al Oliver became one of baseball’s most accomplished hitters, boasting a .303 career batting average and 2,743 hits across 18 seasons. A seven-time All-Star and World Series champion with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Oliver is widely regarded as one of the game’s all-time greats.
Beyond baseball, Oliver has remained a dedicated servant-leader, using his platform to mentor young athletes, serve as a deacon at Beulah Baptist Church, and advocate for his hometown. His impact was officially recognized in 2013 when the Portsmouth City Council named him "Mr. Ambassador" for his contributions to the community.
HB 35, which will name the stretch of State Route 125 between Rocky Fork Road and U.S. Route 52 "Al Oliver Highway," aims to create a lasting tribute to his achievements and influence.
HB 35 has been assigned to the House Transportation Committee and is awaiting its first hearing.
