COLUMBUS – State Rep. Dontavius Jarrells (D-Columbus) today issued a statement in response to a federal judge’s ruling, which awarded back pay and damages to three Ohioans with disabilities for being paid subminimum wages in a sheltered workshop.

"While I am relieved by the court’s decision, it underscores a lingering injustice,” said Rep. Jarrells. "This case highlights a painful reality in our society, where people are still paid subminimum wages. It’s a sobering reminder of the work that remains to be done to ensure fair compensation for all.”

Ohio’s ‘Employment First’ campaign, launched over 10 years ago, has been pivotal in creating more integrated employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Since its inception, the number of subminimum wage positions in the state has dropped by over 80%.

"Every individual who shows equal dedication in their work as their colleagues deserves to be equally rewarded,” said Rep. Jarrells.

House Bill 716, introduced by Rep. Jarrells and former Rep. Brigid Kelly of the 134th General Assembly, did not advance to a hearing before the session concluded. Rep. Jarrells is continuing his efforts to eliminate the practice of subminimum wages at the state level, advocating for new legislation to transition away from this practice.
