Rep. Jarrells Hosts Press Conference, Plans to Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Update Insurance Coverage for Prosthetic, Orthotic Device

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Dontavius L. Jarrells (D-Columbus) today held a press conference to announce that he and State Rep. Jean Schmit (R-Loveland) will be introducing the So Every BODY Can Move (SEBCM) Act in the Ohio House of Representatives. The SEBCM Act will provide insurance coverage to individuals with prosthetics and orthotics so they are able to obtain the devices that are waterproof and can assist them in their everyday lives.
“Mobility is freedom. It is the difference between surviving and truly living. This legislation ensures that every Ohioan, regardless of limb loss or difference, has access to the devices that allow them to work, play, and care for their families with dignity. Every body deserves the right to move,” said Rep. Jarrells.
The SEBCM Act will require state-regulated health plans to provide comprehensive and medically necessary prosthetics and orthotics devices. Providing adequate and appropriate prosthetic and orthotic devices can improve quality of life for those who have limb loss or differences.
“People are not limited by the fact that they do not have a limb, they are limited by not having access to appropriate orthotic and prosthetic devices,” said Autumn Young, So Every BODY Can Move state lead.
The SEBCM Act will update the Ohio Revised Code around insurance for individuals who need prosthetics and orthotics for loss of limbs or limb differences. The original language surrounding this issue is out of date and does not provide coverage for prosthetics and orthotics that are waterproof or used for everyday activity and movement such as standing, walking, running, or cycling.
“Providing appropriate mobility devices will ensure that those with limb loss or differences can move independently and care for themselves. This not only improves their quality of life but also helps reduce long-term healthcare costs associated with conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It is crucial that every body is provided the opportunity to move their body and improve their overall health and wellbeing,” concluded Rep. Jarrells.
The bill will soon be introduced and be assigned to a House committee.
