Rep. Jarrells Expresses Profound Sense of Frustration and Disappointment

COLUMBUS - State Rep. Dontavius Jarrells (D-Columbus) yesterday denounced the passage of the veto override for House Bill (HB) 68 and Governor DeWine’s proposed restrictions on gender affirming care.

“It was a very disheartening day to be a member of this General Assembly,” said Rep. Jarrells. “Too many families will now be faced with tough decisions about how to best address the health and safety of their child because lawmakers think they know better than parents and doctors.”

HB 68 was passed in both the Ohio House and Senate, but vetoed by Governor DeWine at the end of December 2023. The Governor went on to issue an executive order on January 5, 2024 that further limits access to care.

“Fostering inclusivity and addressing broader concerns throughout our state should be the focus of this legislative body. These laws will only exacerbate the marginalization of an already vulnerable segment of our population,” said Rep. Jarrells.

House Democrats will continue to put people first and will always stand with the LGTBQ+ community, championing legislation that protects their rights and recognizes them as vital members of our communities.
