COLUMBUS — State Rep. Dontavius L. Jarrells (D-Columbus) today urged the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to act in addressing the growing environmental concerns surrounding the water usage of data centers in Ohio. These facilities, which are essential to the state's growing tech industry, have increasingly been drawing large amounts of water from Ohio’s lakes, rivers, and streams for cooling purposes.

The Ohio EPA’s proposed permit would expedite wastewater approvals for over 200 data centers statewide, bypassing the thorough review needed to protect public health and safeguard the environment.

“When decisions are made about Ohio’s water, the first question must always be whether families can safely turn on their taps,” said Rep. Jarrells. “Rushing permits for hundreds of data centers without thorough review risks contaminating the water our children drink, and our communities depend on every day. Economic development cannot override the responsibility to protect public health. The Ohio EPA must put the safety of Ohio families first and ensure our water remains clean, secure, and safe for generations to come.”

As data centers continue to multiply across the state, the urgency for clear and effective water management policies is more apparent than ever.

Public comments on the permit can be submitted through the Ohio EPA’s website through January 16th.
