Rep. Jarrells Announces City of Columbus Gun Buyback Event
COLUMBUS- State Rep. Dontavius Jarrells (D-Columbus) today highlighted the City of Columbus’ community gun buyback event, taking place Saturday, September 14, beginning at 10am. Organized by the city’s Office of Violence Prevention, residents can bring handguns, shotguns, rifles, and assault rifles.
“This event is a great opportunity for our residents to get unwanted firearms out of their homes,” said Rep. Jarrells. “Events like this are essential to keep our community safe by keeping guns out of the hands of children and criminals, and preventing violence, self-harm, and gun-related accidents that destroy our families.”
Those taking advantage of this event must bring all firearms unloaded, placed in a plastic/paper bag or box, and in the trunk of their vehicle. No identification is required, and there is no limit on the number of firearms one can surrender. Columbus police officers will additionally be giving out gun locks at the event for safe storage of firearms at home.
Last year’s event collected 344 firearms and put $136,600 in the pockets of Columbus residents. This year, organizers will pay up to $750 in cash gift cards for each firearm, with over $100K available to give out in total.
Saturday’s event is located at Franklin University, 303 S. Grant Ave, and will go on until 2pm or until these funds run out.
