Rep. Brewer Urges Governor to Address Gun Violence in State of the State

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today announced that he has officially submitted a letter to Governor Mike DeWine, urging him to prioritize addressing the ongoing crisis of violence, especially gun violence, in his upcoming State of the State Address.
In the letter, Rep. Brewer urged the governor to speak directly to the families and communities who continue to bear the burden of rising violence across Ohio. He highlights the urgent need for statewide leadership, coordinated prevention efforts, and a message of hope and accountability for those most affected.
“Communities across Ohio are grieving, healing, and fighting every day to keep their loved ones safe,” said Rep. Brewer. “As we approach the State of the State, I am asking the Governor to acknowledge this reality and to speak to the families who have lost children, parents, and neighbors. They deserve to be seen, heard, and supported.”
Rep. Brewer’s letter highlighted the real experiences of residents in Cleveland and other cities who continue to face the daily effects of gun violence. He called on the administration to focus on community-based violence prevention, trauma-informed support systems, and meaningful cooperation with local leaders.
“The State of the State is an opportunity to unite Ohio around solutions,” added Rep. Brewer. “We cannot afford silence. We need a clear commitment to addressing violence as the public health crisis it is.”
The full letter has been transmitted to the governor’s office for review ahead of the address.
