Rep. Brewer Urges an End to Gun Violence
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today called on colleagues to address the gun violence epidemic. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been more than 150 incidents of gun violence in Ohio in 2025, and according to the Ohio Gun Violence Memorial, a total of 54 deaths. Ohio has tragically lost 10 children aged 18 and under to gun violence since the beginning of the year.
These young lives, full of promise and potential, were cut short due to senseless violence. We mourn the losses of Rosalie Martin (4, East Liverpool), James Thomas Jr. (16, Dayton), Elijah Harris (16, Cleveland), Khalyn White (17, Cleveland),Julius Barron (16, Cleveland), Derrick Rogers (18, Dayton), Dewey Christopher Curtis Jr.(18, Cincinnati), Jayme Moore (18, Cleveland), King Robert Ogburn (18, Dayton), and most recently, 10-year-old Kaden Coleman (Cleveland).
“With a majority of these tragedies occurring within District 22, I am calling on my colleagues, gun lobbyists, gun advocates, gun dealers, public officials, and community leaders to come together and find a common solution to address this crisis while respecting the rights of legal gun owners. We can no longer afford to turn a blind eye as our children fall victim to gun violence,” said Rep. Brewer. “How many lives must we lose before we find the heart to truly live up to our state motto, 'Ohio, the Heart of it All?’ We owe it to our communities, our children, and Ohio's future to take meaningful action. We must break the cycle of violence and create a safer future for our youth. Together, we must demand accountability, advocate for stronger preventive measures, and work to protect Ohio’s most vulnerable citizens.”
