Rep. Brewer Joins Colleagues, Advocates to Kick Off "Second Chance Month"

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today joined legislators and the Ohio Justice and Policy Center at a press conference to celebrate “Second Chance Month” and share legislation aimed at giving Ohioans a second chance.
“At the statehouse we hear calls to invest in workforce development, build economic empowerment, and strenthen families. Giving Ohioans a second chance is essential if we wish to meet these goals,” said Rep. Brewer. “That is why my office has focused on introducing legislation that puts people first.”
Rep. Brewer highlighted the following legislation:
- House Bill 368 - Requires eviction records to be sealed after three years.
- House Bill 393 - Requires community based correctional facilities to assist individuals in obtaining their state ID cards.
- House Bill 653 - Establishes caps on late fees and administrative costs on parking tickets.
Second Chance Month is observed every April and is an effort to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by individuals reentering society after incarceration. Speakers at today’s press conference discussed the need for prevention, decriminalization, and wraparound support services.
