Rep. Brewer Introduces Legislation to Address Safe Gun Storage in Ohio

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today introduced two pieces of legislation aimed at promoting safe firearm storage and preventing gun deaths and injuries.

“While these pieces of legislation are not comprehensive gun violence prevention bills, they are a step in the right direction. I am excited to partner with two republican legislators to promote safe storage in our state. This bill and resolution are two parts of my 11-bill legislative package aimed at ending gun violence in Ohio. Gun violence is not a partisan issue, it affects us all,” said Rep. Brewer.

The first piece of bipartisan legislation is the Safe Firearm Storage Resolution which is jointly sponsored by State Rep. Deeter (R-Norwalk). This resolution simply promotes responsible gun ownership and safe storage to prevent unauthorized access.

The second piece of legislation is the Safe Firearm Storage Education Act, jointly sponsored by State Rep. Fischer (R-Boardman). This bill directs state agencies to distribute multilingual firearm safety materials through schools and public spaces.

Both pieces of legislation now await committee assignment.
