Rep. Brewer Introduces Bipartisan Legislation Designating "Fathers Walk Week"
COLUMBUS — State Rep. Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today introduced bipartisan legislation to designate the third week of September as “Fathers Walk Week.”
Each September, the Ohio Commission on Fatherhood (OCF) invites fathers and male mentors to take part in the Fathers Walk either walking or, if unable, driving their children to early childhood programs and schools. This legislation will encourage school districts and fathers to take part in this celebration, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and support in education.
“‘Fathers Walk Week’ is more than just symbolic. When father figures actively participate in a child’s school life, attendance improves, learning becomes deeper, and confidence increases. This acknowledgment will reinforce the efforts already underway in our schools and communities, while also motivating more fathers and mentors to get involved,” said Rep. Brewer.
Research shows that a father’s presence and involvement in their children’s lives is directly linked to better educational outcomes, including higher academic achievement, improved attendance, and fewer behavioral challenges at school. When fathers are engaged, children thrive.
