Rep. Brewer Demands Action Following Another Tragic Accidental Shooting in Akron
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Darnell Brewer (D-Cleveland) today made the following statement concerning an accidental gun death of an 8-year-old last week in Akron:
“Last week, as my colleagues on the other side of the aisle debated the merits of preventing gun owners from being required to carry liability insurance, an 8-year-old boy shot himself with an ‘unsecured’ handgun. Many of my colleagues argue against secure storage, but we must find a common way to stop guns from getting into the hands of children.
I urge my colleagues in this lame duck session to take up House Bill 186 which would exempt sales of firearm safety devices from sales and use tax. How many times must we mourn the life of a child? As state representative for the 18th District of Ohio, it is never my intention to restrict the 2nd amendment rights of any legal gun owner but to save lives and ensure safety, keeping guns out of the hands of those who are not appropriately trained, who obtained them illegally, and out of the hands of children,” said Rep. Brewer.
