COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D–Parma) today announced legislation to officially designate “Hang On Sloopy” as the State Rock Song of Ohio in the Ohio Revised Code.

Although “Hang On Sloopy” was recognized by the Ohio General Assembly in 1985 through a concurrent resolution, the designation was never formally codified into Ohio law.

“For decades, ‘Hang On Sloopy’ has been woven into the fabric of Ohio culture,” said Rep. Brennan. “Whether at high school football games, community celebrations, concerts, or Ohio State traditions, this song has united generations of Ohioans through music, pride, and shared experience.”

The song gained national prominence through the version recorded by The McCoys, fronted by Ohio native Rick Derringer, and has become synonymous with Ohio traditions and identity. Ohio was also the first state in the nation to officially recognize a rock song.

Rep. Brennan said the legislation is intended to celebrate Ohio’s rich musical heritage and preserve an iconic piece of the state’s cultural history.

“This bill may be fun, but it also reflects something meaningful,” Rep. Brennan added. “At a time when our country can feel divided, there is still value in recognizing the traditions and cultural touchstones that bring Ohioans together.”

The legislation would formally codify “Hang On Sloopy” as Ohio’s official state rock song in statute, resolving a long-standing technicality in state law.
