Rep. Somani Highlights the Devastation of Federal Medicaid Budget Cuts in Protect Our Care Press Conference

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) signed on to a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) alongside at least 365 other state legislators representing all 50 states yesterday. The letter called on HHS to rescind its proposed rewrite of the Head Start Program Performance Standards, warning the changes would weaken program quality, destabilize programs, and shift costs to families and states.
In a comment letter to HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., organized by State Innovation Exchange (SiX), the National Women’s Law Center, and Child Care for Every Family Network, the lawmakers urged HHS to preserve the quality standards and essential services relied upon by more than 700,000 young children and their families each year.
“Head Start is a critical federal program that has provided access to high-quality early childhood education for over 60 years. The program was started under President Lyndon B. Johnson as a part of his broader vision for a future where every American, regardless of their background, had access to the basic necessities to live a healthy life such as healthcare, education, and food,” said Rep. Somani. “I believe in that vision of America, and I stand with my fellow state legislators across the nation against any attacks on this vital program. Early education is the key to developing a love for learning, and no child should be denied that opportunity.
