COLUMBUS – State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) joined Governor Mike DeWine Wednesday as he signed House Bill (HB) 173 into law, officially recognizing October as Hindu Heritage Month in the state of Ohio. Originally introduced as HB 72 alongside joint sponsor Rep. Mathews (R-Lebanon), this legislation was added to Rep. Troy’s HB 173 during December’s lame duck session.

“As a Hindu-American, it was important to me to recognize the rich culture, traditions, and achievements that my community has contributed to the state of Ohio. We are a part of the cultural fabric of our state, and now each October will be an opportunity to celebrate our community and educate our fellow Ohioans about our heritage,” said Rep. Somani.

October was chosen as Hindu Heritage Month because it is a significant month in the Hindu religion. Gandhi’s birthday is at the beginning of the month and Diwali, the most important holiday in the Hindu calendar, is typically celebrated near the end of the month.

The signing of HB 173 signals that cultural and religious diversity makes our state stronger.
