COLUMBUS – State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) today announced the passage of House Bill (HB) 178, the C.R.O.W.N (Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act, legislation that makes hair discrimination illegal in Ohio.

“Nobody should face discrimination simply based upon their appearance. This bill makes it explicitly clear that racism has no place in Ohio,” said Rep. Somani.

The C.R.O.W.N Act creates protections against discrimination against individuals because of race-based traits such as hair texture and protective hairstyles, in schools, employment, places of public accommodation, housing, and credit practices. Additionally, HB 178 provides victims of hair discrimination the right to sue the assailant.

During the 135th General Assembly, House Democrats are committed to creating a state that works for and supports all Ohioans, regardless of race, gender, income, and zip code— putting People First.

The bill now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
