Rep. Sims Recognizes Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority During Their Advocacy Day
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Veronica Sims (D-Akron) yesterday rose on the Ohio House floor to recognize the Sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho, a sorority committed to service addressing youth development, women’s and children’s health, and economic needs. Sorors from across Ohio gathered today at the Ohio Statehouse for their advocacy day.
“Throughout Ohio and across the country, the women of Sigma Gamma Rho have dedicated countless hours to community action and philanthropy. From empowering young people through education, to promoting wellness and civic engagement, they have consistently invested in building stronger families and stronger communities,” said Rep. Sims. “Today, these distinguished women are here not only to advocate on issues important to their communities, but also to continue a proud tradition of civic participation and engagement.”
Founded in 1922 at Butler University, Sigma Gamma Rho was established by seven visionary African American educators during a time when opportunities for Black women in higher education and civic leadership were far too limited. Built on the values of scholarship, sisterhood, and service, the organization has grown into an internationally respected sisterhood that continues to uplift communities.
