Rep. Sims Announces Summit County Has Received $753,198 in Brownfield Remediation Awards

Funding will help clean up and redevelop hazardous brownfield sites, creating over 300 employment opportunities

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Veronica Sims (D- Akron) today announced that Summit County has received $753,198 through the Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program to help clean up and redevelop hazardous brownfield sites, creating new employment and development opportunities.

“I am thrilled to see the use of state resources in Summit County to help repurpose abandoned and underutilized sites for future redevelopment. These projects are key to the vitality and revitalization of our district. The many jobs created through these projects will also be crucial in the economic development of the region,” said Rep. Sims.

The sites selected for remediation and assessment in Summit County are:

999 South Main Street – Former gasoline service station, assessment required.
Star Rubber and Portage Machine and Engineering – Industrial company, redevelopment planned.
1594 Main Peninsula – Assessment and redevelopment project.

Today’s announcement includes approximately $102.4M for 35 cleanup and remediation projects and roughly $4.5M for 26 assessment projects across 22 counties. Funds awarded will help assess and clean up industrial, commercial, and institutional brownfield sites that have been abandoned, idled, or underutilized due to a known or potential release of hazardous substances or petroleum.

The Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program is funded by the Ohio General Assembly as part of the current operating budget.
