Rep. Sims Announces $620K Investment for Safe Routes to School Program
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Veronica Sims (D-Akron) today announced Summit County is one of 19 counties in the state of Ohio to receive federal funds to support projects focusing on the safety of children who walk or bike to school. The Ohio Department of Transportation is awarding the funding as part of its Safe Routes to School program, which supports education initiatives and builds infrastructure such as sidewalks and enhanced pedestrian crossings. This year, the program is funding 29 projects in 19 counties.
“Ensuring safe walking and biking routes for our children is crucial to their overall health and wellness as they journey to and from school,” said Rep. Sims.
The City of Akron has been awarded $500K ($375K SRTS and $125K HSIP) for raised crosswalks, signage, and pavement markings, and new curb ramps around priority schools.
Additionally, Summit County Combined General Health District has been awarded $120K for the Akron Local Schools for the Safe Routes to School Coordinator position, materials for walk and roll challenges, International Walk and Bike to School days, wayfinding asphalt art, and traffic gardens.
