Rep. Sims Announces $3.5M in State Funding for Summit County Projects

Veronica R. Sims News

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Veronica Sims (D-Akron) today announced the State Controlling Board has approved more than $3.5M in funding for several key projects in Summit County, including significant investments in campus safety, recreational trails, and housing for individuals with developmental disabilities.

“State investments in our community help improve safety, promote outdoor recreation, and ensure that those with developmental disabilities have access to the housing they need to thrive. These projects are essential to the well-being and growth of Summit County, and I’m proud to advocate for them in the legislature,” said Rep. Sims.

Highlights of the funding include:

  • $500K for University of Akron Campus Safety
    • This funding will go toward improving the physical security and safety of buildings across the university's public campus, contributing to a safer environment for students, faculty, and staff.
  • $500K for Rubber City Heritage Trail-Phase II
    • This multi-use trail will connect neighborhoods in Akron, including East Akron, Middlebury, and Firestone Park, following the historic ABC rail line.
  • $1.2M for Mill Pond Mud Brook-Phase II in Cuyahoga Falls
    • This new trail segment will span nearly a mile and feature boardwalks and a bridge to cross Mill Pond. Once completed, the trail will connect to existing bike lanes and enhance regional connectivity.
  • $322,501 for Spartan Trail-Phase III in Springfield Township
    • The project will extend the trail along Canfield Road and create a new trailhead on township property. The trail will provide safe recreational space for residents and visitors alike.
  • $1.05M for Developmental Disabilities Housing Projects
    • This funding will support the construction of new homes, the purchase of existing homes, and renovation efforts to improve accessibility and create safe living spaces for those in need of specialized care.
