Rep. Sims Announces $14.9M in State Funding for Summit County Projects

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Veronica Sims (D-Akron) last week announced the State Controlling Board has approved more than $14.9M in funding for several key projects in Summit County, including significant investments in campus safety, recreational trails, and housing for individuals with developmental disabilities.

“State investments in our community help improve safety, promote outdoor recreation, and ensure that those with developmental disabilities have access to the housing they need to thrive. These projects are essential to the well-being and growth of Summit County, and I’m proud to advocate for them in the legislature,” said Rep. Sims.

Highlights of the funding include:

  • $8.3M for University of Akron
    • This funding is for the renovation of the main campus throughfare for the Campus Hardscape Buchtel Commons Renovations project.
  • $4.5M for University of Akron 
    • This funding is for the replacement of wired and wireless hardware components for the IT Infrastructure project.
  •  $1.05M for Developmental Disabilities Housing Projects
    • This funding will support the construction of new homes, the purchase of existing homes, and renovation efforts to improve accessibility and create safe living spaces for those in need of specialized care.
  • $500K for University of Akron Campus Safety
    • This funding will go toward improving the physical security and safety of buildings across the university's public campus, contributing to a safer environment for students, faculty, and staff.
  • $500K for Rubber City Heritage Trail-Phase II
    • This multi-use trail will connect neighborhoods in Akron, including East Akron, Middlebury, and Firestone Park, following the historic ABC rail line.
