House Committee Begins Hearings on Early Detection and Awareness of Type 1 Diabetes Act

COLUMBUS—The House Public Health Policy Committee today began hearings on House Bill 633, the Early Detection and Awareness of Type 1 Diabetes Act, announced bill sponsor, State Rep. Thomas Hall (R-Madison Twp.). Hall is sponsoring the legislation alongside State Rep. Joe Miller (D-Amherst).

This bipartisan legislation aims build awareness and increase rates of early detection for Type 1 Diabetes by requiring the Ohio Department of Health to develop informational materials. 

“Having the appropriate resources and information on hand is essential when facing a condition like Type 1 Diabetes that, while incredibly widespread, is often misunderstood,” said Hall. “My goal behind sponsoring this legislation is to help ensure a better and brighter future for our loved ones who live with this condition.”  

Additional provisions of the bill include:

  • Requires informational materials to be made available to each school district, county office of education, and charter school through the department’s website;
  • Requires school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools to make those materials available to the parent or guardian of a student when the student is first enrolled in elementary school; and
  • Outlines minimum requirements of what should be included in the information distributed to parents and guardians about Type 1 Diabetes. 

House Bill 633 awaits additional hearings from the House Public Health Policy Committee.
