Ray Holds Press Conference on Resolution to Recognize Perinatal Mental Health
COLUMBUS—State Rep. Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth) today held a press conference on House Concurrent Resolution 16, which aims to bring awareness to the importance of perinatal mental health. Ray was joined by State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin), State Senator Stephanie Kunze (R-Dublin), State Senator Nickie Antonio (D-Lakewood), and representatives from Mental Health America of Ohio and LifeStance Health.
According to the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Women’s Mental Health, about 85% of mothers experience some type of mood disturbance during the perinatal period and 10-15% develop more significant symptoms. Further, death by suicide is a leading cause of maternal mortality and accounts for about 20% of postpartum deaths.
“As a mother and a grandmother, I know firsthand how critical this issue is,” said Ray during the press conference. “To give our children the best chance at life and opportunity to live up their full potential we must start with the health of their mother, including their mental health.”
H.C.R. 16 awaits a vote on the House floor.
