COLUMBUS—Assistant Majority Whip Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth) and joint sponsor, State Representative Rachel Baker (D-Cincinnati) today held a press conference on the Adoption Modernization Act.

The Adoption Modernization Act is priority legislation that modernizes Ohio’s adoption process and prioritizes the best interest of the child.

“The state of Ohio has over 3,000 children looking for a family to call their own,” said Ray during the press conference. "Ohio families and children need this legislation.”

The legislation provides financial support for expecting mothers, expedites kinship care, and clarifies Ohio law to help streamline the adoption process.

“This bill prioritizes people over burdensome processes that limit opportunities for our children,” said Baker. “All children deserve the opportunity to succeed and be supported in loving homes.”

According to data published by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, there are currently almost 15,000 children in foster care statewide and 3,500 awaiting adoption.

The bill awaits consideration by the House Families and Aging Committee.
