COLUMBUS—The House Behavioral Health Committee today began hearings on House Concurrent Resolution 16, which will recognize the importance of perinatal mental health, announced resolution sponsor, State Rep. Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth).

According to the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Women’s Mental Health, about 85% of mothers experience some type of mood disturbance during the perinatal period and 10-15% develop more significant symptoms.

“Recognizing the signs and symptoms of perinatal depression and other mental health conditions is essential for timely intervention and support,” said Ray during sponsor testimony. “We must continue to encourage open dialogue about mental health and increase access mental health services during pregnancy and after childbirth.”

H.C.R. 16 awaits further consideration by the House Behavioral Health Committee.
