COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (Parma) today announced that the Ohio Department of Development is awarding$18.8M in grant funding to Cuyahoga County for the cleanup and remediation throughout the county. The Brownfield Remediation Project focuses on supporting targeted solutions that impact quality of life, such as water infrastructure improvements, broadband expansion, brownfield redevelopment, and the demolition of blighted buildings.

“I am proud and excited for this opportunity to invest and revitalize neighborhoods in our region. I know these funds will serve as a great support in the county’s endeavor to provide more housing, draw in more businesses, and strengthen our economy,” said Rep. Brennan.

Cuyahoga County has been delegated funds for eight brownfield remediation projects. One of these projects was given $1.1 M.  It includes asbestos abatement and interior demolition within the historic Old River Road Assemblage. There are two phases of the project. The first includes converting the 1235 Old River Road warehouse into 100 market-rate apartments, with plans for retail expansion along the street front. The second phase will redevelop the riverfront buildings for hospitality or residential use, aiming to enhance the Flats East Bank area with additional residential and commercial spaces.

The Department of Development awarded a total of $58.2M in state support to aid in the clean-up and redevelopment of 61 hazardous brownfield sites in 33 counties.

The funds allocated today will help assess brownfield sites that are abandoned, idled, or underutilized due to a known or potential release of hazardous substances or petroleum. Following site remediation, properties can be redeveloped to revitalize neighborhoods and attract new economic development.
