COLUMBUS— State Representatives Thomas Hall (R-Madison Twp.) and Rodney Creech (R-West Alexandria) today provided sponsor testimony before the House Education Committee on House Bill 125, legislation to support Ohio students who participate in 4-H and FFA programs.

Under the proposed legislation, a student from kindergarten through twelfth grade will be excused for an absence that comes as a result of their participation in 4-H and FFA.

“The goal of our education system is to give our students lifelong skills that allow them to achieve success in the future,” said Hall during sponsor testimony. “4-H and FFA strive to provide students hands-on experience to achieve the exact same goal.”

To qualify for an excused absence, students will be required to provide documentation proving their participation in the activity. The school district will also be required to give the student the opportunity to make up any work missed due to the program.

“4-H and FFA are important programs for many students and play a critical role in developing the future of agriculture in Ohio,” said Creech. “I will always support student participation in these programs.”

A school administrator will be permitted to deny a request under certain circumstances, such as conflicts with state assessments.

House Bill 125 awaits further consideration from the House Education Committee.
