Veto of Anti-Trans Bill Supports Children, Families
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Richard Dell'Aquila (D-Seven Hills) today called Governor Mike DeWine’s decision to veto the discriminatory House Bill (HB) 68 an extraordinary and much needed sign of rationality and support for Ohio’s children and LGBTQ+ community, as well as a protection for parental rights.
“Our caucus unanimously signed a letter to Governor DeWine, asking that he veto HB 68 - an extreme solution in search of a problem," said Rep. Dell'Aquila. "The legislation began as separate bills regarding medical care of minors, and a prohibition of transgender females in women's sports. Both issues were exaggerated by the sponsors and proponents. The consent of a parent or guardian is normally required to provide non-emergency medical care to minors.”
In our letter on December 16, 2023, House Democrats called upon Governor DeWine to veto the legislation saying, “Hate, as you yourself have said, has no place in this state.” HB 68 originally passed the Ohio House on December 13th by a vote divided along party lines. The Governor's veto once again affirms that all Ohioans have the right to keep their individual medical choices between themselves and their physicians.
