Reps. Dell 'Aquila, Mathews Celebrates Passage of Homestead Exemption Bill Combating Rising Property Taxes
COLUMBUS – State Reps. Dell’ Aquila (D-Seven Hills) and Rep. Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon) today announced the passage of House Bill (HB) 247, which would aim to protect fixed income seniors as property taxes continue to be on the rise.
“Among the most frequent inquiries my office receives are those from fixed income homeowners expressing concern over their ever-increasing property tax burden. We in the House Ways & Means Committee have considered several possible measures to enhance the homestead exemption to assist these constituents. I am pleased that our HB 274 is the first bill to come to the House floor and to pass so resoundingly. We now await action from the Ohio Senate in the coming few weeks as the statehouse nears the end of the 135th General Assembly,” says Rep. Dell ’Aquila.
The bill was passed by a 78-11 vote on Tuesday, December 10th.
HB 274 would establish an enhanced Homestead Exemption for certain long-term homeowners who qualify for the general Homestead Exemption and have occupied their home for 20 or more consecutive years. This bill will benefit an estimated 461,450 Ohio homeowners who would qualify for the enhanced reduction.
HB 274 will head to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
