COLUMBUS – State Rep. Latyna M. Humphrey (D-Columbus) joined Governor Mike DeWine today as he signed her House Bill (HB) 28 into law, officially designating March as Triple Negative Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Ohio. This pivotal legislation aims to raise awareness about Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), a unique and aggressive form of breast cancer that disproportionately impacts young women and Black women.

HB 28 passed the Ohio House on May 24, 2023 with an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 87-1. It received unanimous support in the Ohio Senate on December 11, 2024 with a 31-0 vote.

“Triple Negative Breast Cancer is a devastating disease that grows and spreads faster than other forms of breast cancer, often affecting women under 40 and Black women at higher rates,” said Rep. Humphrey during a speech on the floor of the Ohio House. “This designation honors the women fighting TNBC, while educating our communities and encouraging the support and research needed to combat this disease.”

TNBC is distinct from other types of breast cancer because it lacks receptors for estrogen, progesterone, and HER2. As a result, treatment for TNBC requires a specialized approach, and standard breast cancer treatments are often ineffective. Myths about TNBC, such as the belief that it is particularly difficult to treat, highlight the importance of raising awareness and providing education about the disease.

“This bill is not just about a designation—it’s about building a community of support and ensuring that women with TNBC and their families know they are not alone,” added Rep. Humphrey. “The month of March will now serve as a reminder of our collective responsibility to spread awareness and support ongoing research for better treatments.”

The signing of HB 28 marks a significant step in honoring women impacted by Triple Negative Breast Cancer and providing a platform to share their stories, promote early detection, and advance research efforts.
