Rep. Humphrey Mourns the Loss of Rev. Jesse Jackson

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Latyna M. Humphrey (D-Columbus) today issued a statement mourning the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson, a pioneering civil rights leader, faith leader, and advocate for justice whose decades of service transformed the national conversation on equity and opportunity.
“Today, we mourn the loss of a giant,” said Rep. Humphrey. “Rev. Jesse Jackson dedicated his life to expanding justice, protecting voting rights, and demanding that America live up to its promise for all people. His courage and conviction helped shape generations of leaders, including so many of us serving in public office today.”
Rev. Jackson rose to national prominence during the Civil Rights Movement, working closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and continuing the fight for economic and social justice in the decades that followed. He later founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, an organization committed to civil rights, political empowerment, and economic inclusion.
“Rev. Jackson’s leadership reminded us that faith and activism can work hand in hand,” added Rep. Humphrey. “He believed deeply in the power of coalition building — bringing people together across race, class, and background to push for meaningful change.”
Throughout his life, Rev. Jackson championed policies that addressed poverty, expanded access to education, and strengthened opportunities for marginalized communities. His presidential campaigns further elevated issues impacting working families and communities of color, ensuring their voices were heard on the national stage.
His legacy extends far beyond policy. For many, Rev. Jackson symbolized resilience, hope, and an unshakable belief in collective progress. He challenged systems of injustice while calling on communities to remain engaged, organized, and empowered.
“As we reflect on his life, we must also recommit ourselves to the work he advanced,” concluded Rep. Humphrey. “The fight for equity and dignity is ongoing. The greatest way we can honor Rev. Jesse Jackson is by continuing to organize, to advocate, and to ensure that every community has a seat at the table.”
Rep. Humphrey extends her heartfelt condolences to the Jackson family and to all those across the nation who were inspired by Rev. Jackson’s life and leadership.
