Rep. Humphrey Introduces Legislation to Protect Ohio Families During Federal Government Shutdown
COLUMBUS — State Rep. Latyna M. Humphrey (D-Columbus) today introduced legislation to protect critical benefits for Ohio families amid the ongoing federal government shutdown, which threatens assistance programs relied upon by millions of Ohioans. The bill would ensure continued funding for essential federal assistance programs—including SNAP, TANF, and WIC—during any lapse in federal funding.
“Our last government shutdown under this president lasted 35 days,” said Rep. Humphrey. “My constituents—and Ohioans across this state—cannot have their benefits held hostage for that long. With no clear end in sight, we must act to protect families before it’s too late.”
Rep. Humphrey previously introduced this legislation (House Bill 288) in the 135th General Assembly, where it received a first hearing in the House Families & Aging Committee.
“As state legislators, we have a responsibility to step up in these uncertain times,” concluded Rep. Humphrey. “While we can’t control what happens in Washington, we can make sure Ohioans are cared for—our children are fed, and our struggling mothers aren’t left wondering where their next meal will come from. My constituents do not have the luxury of waiting for Congress to act. This legislation is about basic dignity and survival, and I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to move it forward quickly.”
