COLUMBUS – State Rep. Latyna M. Humphrey (D-Franklin) today issued the following statement after last night’s shooting outside the Martin Luther King Jr. branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library in the King Lincoln-Bronzeville neighborhood left a Columbus City Schools student critically injured.

“Our community is tired. Our families are exhausted. Our children should not have to navigate gun violence in places meant to nurture their growth,” said Rep. Humphrey. “Libraries are pillars of opportunity. Schools are sanctuaries of learning. Yet too often, our young people are caught in cycles of violence that policymakers have failed to meaningfully address.”

Rep. Humphrey emphasized that while details of the incident remain under investigation, the broader issue of gun violence demands immediate legislative attention.

“We cannot continue offering thoughts and prayers while ignoring policy solutions,” continued Rep. Humphrey. “We need comprehensive strategies that include responsible gun legislation, stronger youth intervention programs, expanded mental health access, and real investment in the neighborhoods most impacted by violence.”

The representative stressed that communities like King Lincoln-Bronzeville deserve proactive prevention, not reactive responses.

“For too long, violence has been treated as an inevitable reality in certain zip codes,” said Rep. Humphrey. “It is not inevitable. It is the result of disinvestment, lack of opportunity, and the refusal to confront easy access to firearms.”

Rep. Humphrey also reaffirmed her commitment to working with local leaders, Columbus City Schools, and community stakeholders to pursue funding for violence interruption initiatives and youth engagement programs.

“Our young people deserve to feel safe walking into a library, gathering with friends, or planning their futures,” concluded Rep. Humphrey. “This moment must be a catalyst. We owe it to our children to act with urgency and courage.”
