Rep. Brent Votes Against Republicans Latest Attack on Abortion Rights: "She Loses Act"

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Juanita O. Brent (D-Cleveland) today issued a statement following the passage of House Bill (HB) 347, also known as the "SHE WINS Act," which would impose new restrictions on abortion rights in Ohio.
“Ohioans were clear when they passed Issue 1 in 2023. Abortions are a fundamental right, not a political bargaining chip,” said Rep. Brent. “HB 347 isn't about 'winning' or 'empowering' women-it’s about creating hurdles for low-income families, rural residents, and people of color who already face massive disparities in our healthcare system. By ignoring the constitutional mandate of the people, the sponsors of this bill aren't winning; they are losing the trust of every voter in this state.”
The proposed "SHE WINS Act" would mandate:
- A 24-hour waiting period that necessitates multiple trips to a clinic, disproportionately impacting those without flexible work schedules, childcare, paid time off or reliable transportation;
- Biased "Informed Consent" modules that advocates argue are designed to shame and intimidate patients rather than provide medical care; and
- New Civil Liabilities allowing third parties to sue physicians for at least $100,000, creating a "bounty" system intended to shutter remaining clinics.
